DJ Doug Burkhart Mixes

This page is a collection of live (for the most part) mixes that spanned much of my DJ career.  I also included a mix that was given to me on cassette which is not mine, but I think it is worth a listen.   Please enjoy!  If you have an questions please contact me at http://www.facebook.com/doug.burkhart

I never really produced a full studio mix (ok one called Clubstyle a very long time ago before I moved to the big city) because I don’t believe them to be an accurate representation of a DJ.  A cassette tape or VHS was always recording my long term residencies.  I have a collection of many tapes recorded from The Honky Tonk [Marion, OH], Headliners [Cleveland, Ohio] and Trilogy [Cleveland, OH] - also some incriminating VHS tapes from The Cadillac Club [Marion, OH].  I don’t own any live mixes from SpyBar [Cleveland] (which is really regrettable), Twist [Cleveland], or Groovee Little Nightclub [Cleveland]. I also regret that I don’t have any mixes (except one really degraded VHS one) from “Live at Headliners on Jammin’ 92.3” where I had my own hip hop mix show for a bit!   I haven’t spun out regularly since about mid 2009, so I suppose you can say I am on sabbatical - but don’t use the term re+tired.

DJ DOUG BURKHART: Mix Beatmatrix Radio 91.1 (2013)

Recorded December 30, 2013 – Live in studio at 91.1

[MP3] 256kbps, 113 mb – 45 Minutes

These are some of my favorite tracks from 2013 (the last one is 2012). It is a short mix because we decided to just play some tracks from 2013 as they stand on their own after the mix – but it isn’t recorded here.

DJ DOUG BURKHART: 2009 Mix Beatmatrix Radio 91.1 (2009)

Recorded March 2009 – Live in studio at 91.1

[MP3] 256kbps, 113 mb - 1 hour

This is just the mix, but it does include some commentary from the hosts Stout XTC, Graph, and Homework Guy.  Many of the tracks in this mix are what I consider to be modern day classics – one of the early tracks has some spoken word which I really identify with and that is the quote below.  This is the last recorded mix that I have done and I regret that one of the records skips – but that just shows character ;-)  The last track “Believe” is a record that doesn’t quite fit but it is included because it defines a pivotal moment in my dj career and speaks to a higher power which makes it special to me.

DJ DOUG BURKHART: Live at Shooters(2003)

Recorded Sunday September 7, 2003 – Early Afternoon

 [MP3] 64kps, 43 mb  - 1 hour, 30 minutes

This mix was recorded at the Cleveland Shooters as part of the Headrush Music Summer Series finale.   We played on the stage, and it was a successor the community inspired “On Deck” event that we threw as a team earlier in the summer.  This is one of my favorite mixes, and I was in a lot of pain when it was recorded thanks to a kidney stone.  Thanks to Dave & Amy for recording it!

DJ DOUG BURKHART: 2003 Interview & Mix Beatmatrix Radio 91.1 (2003)

Recorded April 2003 – Live in studio at 91.1

[MP3] 80kbps, 39 mb – 1 hour, 7 minutes

Be forewarned that this is an interview and mix.  It was recorded live in studio on the BeatMatrix radio show which happens on Mondays.  While StoutXTC and Graph currently host this show, this mix is from the infancy of the program where Jassen and Calvin were the hosts.  There is about 3 minutes of the beginning of the program which includes some event listings.  At the end of the mix, there is a short interview with me.  Finally there is a phone in interview for a local event at the end.  I thought it would be interesting to include the whole program for posterity.

DJ DOUG BURKHART: Spybar Promo CD Mix (2002)

Recorded July 2002 in studio

[MP3] 256kbps, 19 mb – 10 minutes

This was part of the Spy Bar anniversary promo mix CD.  The CD had mixes from myself, Mr Tik Tak, and Mick Boogie, and maybe something from the folks at Get Hep Swing.  The point was to demonstrate the music offerings of Spy Bar.   The mixes and layers were recorded live, and the entire mix was later edited down to fit in 10 minutes.

DJ DOUG BURKHART: Ritual at Moda (2004)

Recorded Saturday January 17, 2004 - Opening set for Derrick Carter

[MP3] 128kbps, 67 mb – 1 hour, 15 minutes

This was recorded live at Moda (they had a cd burner in the dj booth).  It was my opening set for Derrick Carter and was a memorable night .  I don’t consider this to be one of my best mixes, but a lot of people said they really enjoyed this set so here it is.  Pictures from this even can be found on Ray G’s website - http://www.pbase.com/rayge/ritual_1_17_04

DJ DOUG BURKHART: Live at Trilogy Part 2 (1997)

Recorded Friday November 14, 1997 - 1:00am-2:30am

[MP3] 128kbps, 84 meg – 1 hour, 30 minutes

This mix was recorded live a Trilogy nightclub as part of the WMMS night out with Jennifer Wyld.  It was recorded to cassette tape and then converted to mp3 and the flip from side a to side b was edited.  The night was formatted into three distinct sections.  Warmup was radio friendly tunes that people would sit around and sing or drink to.  Part 1 consisted of modern rock that you could dance to, industrial, and 80’s new wave dance hits (along with a little techno).  Part 2 consisted of a mixup of varying styles of electronic dance music.  This particular mix consists of a progression of house , speed garage, and trance.

UNKNOWN DJ: WYLT 92.3 1978 Disco Mix (1978)

Recorded from a broadcast to cassette in 1978.

[MP3] 64kbps, 40 mb – 1 hour, 30 minutes

This was recorded live from the radio in 1978. 92.3 became Jammin 92 and now is a Rock station in Cleveland.  This was recorded before turntables had pitch controls so the mixes are the best they could do at that point in time. Take special note that this was NOT top 40 mixes!   Since I converted this from cassette editing from side a to side b was done to preserve continuity. The name of the DJ is unknown.  DJ Randy (the founder of Grand Poo-bas and original Pooba’) let me borrow the tape.

[MP3] First Traktor Mix

Quote
“So I either had to get with it, or get out – and my need to get with it was much more powerful.  We dress a certain way.  We walk a certain way.  We talk a certain way.  We create a certain way.  We paint a certain way.  We... we make a love a certain way.  You know, all of these things we do in different, unique specific way that is personally ours - and we decided that it is time for us to, to take over our own lives and do it the way we know we want to do it as opposed to having someone else continually depersonalize us and tell us how we're supposed to do something because they're viewing us through their eyes, not our eyes.  If they couldn't see it they could just feel it. Learn to love yourself.”
